On the morning of 17 February, heavy fighting broke out in Pale Township, Sagaing Region, between the Burma National Revolutionary Army (BNRA), led by Bo Nagar, and forces aligned with the National Unity Government (NUG).
Local witnesses reported the use of heavy weapons, machine guns, and drone attacks near Chinpyit and Poppa villages, where BNRA troops are stationed.
Residents from several nearby villages, including Kyarsi and Maungtong, have been forced to flee their homes as gunfire and explosions echoed through the area.
The conflict marks a significant escalation following a separate skirmish on 12 February between Yinmabin District Battalion 4 and BNRA Battalion 3, which resulted in the death of one Battalion 4 member.
Bo Nagar stated on social media that NUG Ministry of Defence battalions began attacking BNRA checkpoints with artillery and drones starting around 7:30 am.
Meanwhile, NUG spokesperson U Nay Phone Latt informed Mizzima that the Ministries of Home Affairs and Defence are cooperating to investigate and arrest members of the BNRA for alleged crimes.
Tensions in the region have been simmering for some time, particularly cantered around Chinpyit village, which was previously the site of a dispute over the closure of toll gates.
While weapons and personnel from past confrontations were briefly returned after negotiations, the current outbreak of violence suggests a breakdown in diplomacy between the resistance groups.
Total casualties from the latest round of fighting remain unconfirmed.
The fighting between the resistance groups has forced residents from Chinpyit, Kyarsi, Poppa, and Maungtong villages to flee their homes.
