Latpadaung Inquiry: phosphorous was used, but mining should continue

Tuesday, 12 March 2013 11:35 Mizzima News

The Latpadaung Inquiry Commission released its long-awaited report on Monday night in which it confirmed that smoke bombs containing phosphorous were fired on protesters, including Buddhist monks, who had occupied a site at the copper mine project in Sagaing region.

The Commission, which was appointed by President Thein Sein and is chaired by opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, faulted the police force for failing to understand how the smoke bombs worked and recommended police receive riot-control training, according to AP.

However, the report said the copper mine "should not be unilaterally stopped." While acknowledging the mine lacked strong environmental protection measures and would not create more jobs for local people, the report said that scrapping the mine could create tension with China and could discourage badly needed future foreign investment, AP said.
