(Mizzima) – Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit Burma in May to bolster bilateral ties, the Press Trust of India reported on Monday.

Singh is expected to meet with Burmese officials over a two-day period, and the dates are now being finalized. India is actively involved in over a dozen economic and civic projects in Burma, including important infrastructural areas.

These include upgrade and resurfacing of the 160-kilometre Tamu-Kalewa-Kalemyo road, construction and upgrade of the Rhi-Tiddim Road and the Kaladan Multimodal Transport Project.

Indian and Burmese officials are in a process of moving to closer ties. India sees Burma as an important transportation gateway, and it is interested in countering a stronger Chinese presence in Burma.
