(Mizzima) – The Burmese ambassador to Thailand on Tuesday asked the Thai deputy prime minister to work to help Burmese migrants who apply to join the Thai nationality verification program.
Ambassador Aung Thein asked Dr. Chalerm Ubumrung to ensure the official fees for the applications were not too expensive and could prevent many migrants from joining the program, which allows them to work legally in Thailand.
He also asked the Thai government to try to prevent some Thai officials from demanding bribes to process migrant applications and to ensure that they received the full benefit of Thai laws.
The deputy PM said he would take the requests from the ambassador and other related issues into a meeting of the Thai Cabinet on February 13.
