(Mizzima) – Burma’s new human rights commission on Saturday asked President Thein Sein to release prisoners who are not a threat to stability in the country.
Burma’s three state-owned newspapers on Friday ran the appeal by the National Human Rights Commission chairman Win Mar calling for a general amnesty, according to The Associated Press. Publication of the appeal is significant because the newspapers closely mirror government positions.
However, previous calls for a general amnesty have not resulted in a full release of inmates who are considered political prisoners. Political prisoners were released among other inmates on two occasions in 2011.
