(Mizzima) – The European Union says it will open a representative office in Burma in the near future.
An agreement has been reached with the Burmese government to open an office in Rangoon, according to a Voice of America report, quoting an EU spokesperson.
"It won't be a full EU delegation or anything like that. It will just be an office responsible mainly for the management of aid programs and so forth.” No date for the opening of the office was announced.
The office will report to the EU ambassador in Bangkok.
After the November 2010 election, Burma's first in 20 years, the EU and other western countries said they would observe developments with a view of easing sanctions if the new government implements democratic reforms.
