Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – A senior member of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) and a Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) member, retired Lieutenant General Tin Aye, resigned as a member of Parliament on Wednesday.
An MP who attended the joint session of Parliament told Mizzima that Parliament Office Director General Myint Thein read the general’s resignation letter to the full body.
AS a member of the SPDC, Tin Aye played a pivotal role in procuring military hardware from North Korea, and he is the former chairman of the Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd., the giant state conglomerate that controls vast economic holdings.
His resignation touched off wild rumours and speculation among MPs in Naypyidaw.
Some lawmakers said he may have resigned to take another more important position in the new government. Others said he may have been dissatisfied with the role of being one among hundreds of MPs.
‘When he came to attend Parliament sessions, he never entered even after almost all the MPs had taken their seats in the parliament chamber’ said one MP.
‘The top members who hold high positions such as president, vice presidents, the speakers of the two houses usually enter the chamber only when the 10-minute warning bell rings.
‘He sat in the second row of “B” Row. I think he already knew what position he would get in this new government. Sometimes he came in with only five minutes remaining’, he said.
Tin Aye is a graduate of the Defence Services Academy (DSA) 9th Intake, and he is one of several key generals who resigned from their military posts in April 2010 before the 2010 election.
He was born in Letsaungyu village in Tadaoo Township, Mandalay Division.
