New Delhi (Mizzima) – A writer in his 80s often critical of the Burmese ruling junta in public talk shows is still waiting for authorities to issue him the passport he applied for this year.
Aung Thin, 83, was also refused a travel document three years ago, he said, adding that this year’s application had been fruitless despite the passing of a reasonable waiting time.
“I submitted all the required documents … I don’t know why they have not yet issued this passport … In some talk shows, my lectures sometimes inadvertently hit out at their [the Burmese junta’s] policies, which I think is the reason for the delay,” Aung Thin said.
He is applying for the passport to enable him to visit his son in Singapore.
A writer from Mandalay said: “Not only Saya (master) Aung Thin, we would like to see everyone able to travel freely … They should be more sympathetic to elderly people who are separated from their loved ones.”
Aung Thin’s works on literary criticism and youth reform are very popular, including Ethics and Wisdom. He also covered child-raising and wrote on development of a new generation of Burmese.
The author was born in Taungdwingyi Township in Magway Division in 1927 and lectured in Burmese language at the Defence Services Academy in the former colonial hill town of Maymyo in Mandalay Division. He achieved prominence in literary circles through his articles for the Myawaddy magazine.
