Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – The winner of ‘Miss Tourism 2010’, a beauty contest to be held in February, will be appointed as ‘Tourism Ambassador’ by the Union of Myanmar Travel Association (UMTA).

“The winner of Miss Tourism 2010 will receive a cash award of 1 million Kyat (USD 1000 approximately) and she will be appointed as the ‘Tourism Ambassador’. She will be instructed on what to do by the UMTA,” an official of the People Media, the group organizing the pageant, told Mizzima.

The official said the pageant is to be held on February 12, to promote tourism, to create awareness about Burma’s unexplored and beautiful regions and to appoint a tourism ambassador.

Sale of forms for the beauty contest would begin on Thursday at Kyat 5000 per form. It will be available at various centres in Rangoon including the office of the People Media in Lapyiwun plaza and Talents and Model Agency, the official added.

Organizers have specified that contestants would be required to choose two costumes – one of a contemporary fashion and a cultural costume.

According to a press release by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, tourism in Burma saw a drastic decline in 2007, decreasing up to 5.9 per cent compared to tourist visits to the country in 2006. The release also indicated a further fall in 2008.
