Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Workers of a textile factory in the Industrial Zone (3) in Rangoon’s suburban Township of Hlaing Tharyar demonstrated outside the factory on Thursday morning, sources said.

“It is not a protest but a demonstration in support of our demands. The demands relate to workers of the Weng Hong Hung factory. Authorities are still negotiating,” an official at the Industrial Zone dealing with workers, told Mizzima over telephone.

The official, however, refused to give details.

According to Mizzima’s correspondent in Rangoon, nearly 800 workers of the Weng Hong Hung textile factory demonstrated on Thursday morning, on a 14-point charter of demands to the company. This is a rare incident in military ruled Burma.

The Burmese Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Maung Oo and other officials have reached the factory, the correspondent said.

“The Home Minister and the Police Chief are in the factory negotiating regarding the demands by the workers,” the correspondent added.
