New Delhi (Mizzima) - US President Barack Obama has been declared winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009, for his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday said Obama had been chosen to be this year’s Nobel Peace winner, for his vision and work for a world without nuclear weapons, and his emphasis on dialogue and negotiation as a means to solve international conflicts.

The Committee’s statement on Friday also said it endorsed Obama's appeal that, “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”

Obama, as the 44th President of the United States, has also been applauded by many Burma observers and interest groups for his new policy on the Burmese junta.

The Obama administration, unlike his predecessor George Bush, has decided to talk to the Burmese junta, while maintaining sanctions, which can be phased-out, depending on improvements made by the junta on human rights and democracy.

Burma’s imprisoned opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is also a Nobel Peace Laureate for the year 1991.
