Rangoon (Mizzima) – On-arrival visas will be available at Mandalay International Airport soon, according to officials.
The move comes as Burma is experiencing a surge in foreign arrivals from international airlines eager to establish routes into the country’s international airports.
The move follows on-arrival visas at Rangoon International Airport. Both the Mandalay and Rangoon airports are undergoing plans for upgrading and expansion, as tourist arrivals increase in response to Burma’s democratic reforms.
In Burma, on-arrival visas started on June 1, 2012, at Rangoon International Airport with five on-arrival visa counters. Later, the number of counters was increased to eight.
At the Rangoon International Airport an average of about 60 passengers [foreigners] enter the country using on-arrival visas per day.
The number of tourist arrivals in Rangoon reached 357,159 in the first nine months of 2012, local media reported on Monday.
Thai tourists ranked No. 1 followed by Japanese travelers followed by passengers from China, South Korea, United States, Malaysia, France, Singapore and Germany.
Burma grants on-arrival visas for visitors from Asean countries, Australia, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the US and the UK.
