Strategic setback: Myanmar junta retakes key battalion camp and road links in Thabeikkyin

The Myanmar junta has reportedly reclaimed control over the Infantry Battalion 148 camp near Kyauk Hle Bee village, marking a significant strategic reversal for resistance forces in northern Mandalay Region.

According to ground sources and reports from Mizzima, the recapture of the battalion headquarters also coincided with the withdrawal of revolutionary forces from the Twin Nge–Momeik road, a vital corridor linking Thabeikkyin Township with the gem-rich hub of Mogok.

“Battalion 148, located on the road to Mogok, is now under the control of the Military Council. The council has also secured the road to Twin Nge, while forces acting in these areas including the KPDF, KIA, ABSDF, and Mogok Strategy People’s Defence Force have withdrawn,” the source said.

At the end of 2025, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) returned territories captured during Operation 1027 including Momeik and Mogok to the Myanmar junta following mediation by China.

However, the military had been able to control only the downtown areas, while revolutionary forces remained in the town and surrounding areas before withdrawing, the source added.

“Over the past 10 days, direct routes between Momeik and Mogok have been reopened, along with a link from Mogok to the Kwin areas of Momeik and another running from Pyang Khaung village through Twin Nge. Once the Military Council secured these routes, resistance forces were forced to retreat. It is a setback for the revolution,” the source said.

The TNLA and its allied forces captured these areas on 9 August 2025. Mizzima has contacted spokespersons for the Mogok Strategy People’s Defence Force and the Ta’ang Army for further information on the situation in the region, but has yet to receive a response.
