An elderly woman and a middle-aged man were killed in a Myanmar junta airstrike in the Mawchi area of Hpa Saung Township, Karenni State, according to the Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State.

A 74-year-old woman and a middle-aged man were killed, and at least six houses were destroyed, in an airstrike on a civilian village in the Mawchi area at around 1 am on 5 February.

“There was no fighting in the area, although clashes occurred between Bawlakhe and Hpa Saung. Villages there are home to both local residents and internally displaced people, and in recent days, civilian homes have been destroyed,” said IEC Secretary-2 U Banya Khun Aung.

He said the area struck by the bombing was not a site of active fighting.

On 30 January, the junta carried out a previous airstrike on a village in the Mawchi region, killing one civilian and injuring five others.

The Karenni Human Rights Group (KnHRG) reported on 4 February that three civilians were killed and six others, including a child, were injured in airstrikes and by mortar fire carried out by the junta.
