A Myanmar national who fled after a shooting near a 7-Eleven store in Mae Sot, Thailand, was arrested at noon local time on 22 January, according to Thai media reports.

The arrest followed a manhunt that lasted more than 24 hours.

The young Myanmar gunman was reportedly handed over to Thai authorities by Bo Dar Baw, commander of the Cobra Battalion, which operates along the Thaung Rin (Moei) River.

The incident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. on 20 January near a 7-Eleven store in Mae Ku Ward, Mae Sot. When Thai police stopped two Myanmar men on a motorcycle for inspection, the passenger opened fire on the officers before fleeing the scene on foot.

The motorcycle driver was arrested near the 7-Eleven store in Mae Ku Ward, where the incident took place, and was detained at Mae Sot Police Station.

Thai authorities then launched a large-scale manhunt to track down the fugitive gunman.

The gunman’s firearm, clothing and bag were found abandoned in a sugarcane field on Tuesday morning, and police are now investigating possible links following his arrest.

Myanmar migrant workers donated blood at Mae Sot General Hospital on Tuesday morning for a Thai police sergeant injured in the shooting.

The injured sergeant is reported to be out of danger but is still undergoing surgery.
