Mizzima awarded global JTI certificate for reliable news on Myanmar

IFC to open microfinance institution in Burma

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) announced on Wednesday that it will be setting up a new microfinance institution in Burma.

The World Bank Group member has joined forces with several European banks and will support Cambodia’s ACLEDA Bank Plc to create ACLEDA MFI Myanmar Co.

“Our investment in a microfinance institution is a good start to our support for Myanmar’s economic reforms in order to improve access to finance, create more jobs and reduce poverty for its people,” said Sergio Pimenta, IFC’s director for East Asia and the Pacific. “Through ACLEDA MFI Myanmar, IFC will help scale up the country’s microfinance industry and increase access to financial services for both the urban and rural poor. This will help convince other players that affordable microfinance services can be delivered effectively in Myanmar.”

The institution will provide loans to micro and small businesses run by women. It is hoped that it will provide 200,000 of these loans by 2020.

“This is a key milestone of our long-term partnership with IFC,” said In Channy, chief executive officer of ACLEDA Bank, one of Cambodia's leading retail banks. “As a leading microfinance provider in Cambodia, we are confident that we can leverage our extensive experience in providing affordable financing to serve Myanmar’s smaller enterprises and low-income households.”

First ministerial meeting held

Mizzima Myanmar held the first meeting among newly appointed ministers after a recent major cabinet reshuffle by the military in capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday morning, according to a release from the Military True News Information Team Xinhua reported. The Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, acting President U Myint Swe and nine newly appointed union ministers were present at the meeting held at the Presidential Palace, the release said. Min Aung Hlaing unveiled plans to include reopening religious buildings and pagodas, resuming domestic travel and hotel businesses as well as industries in line with COVID-19 rules and regulations, and revitalizing the country's economy.

Indonesia detains British woman on terror suspect list

Tazneen Miriam Sailar -- a Manchester-born convert to Islam married to an Indonesian jihadist who was killed in Syria -- is not charged with terror offences. But she and her late husband are on an Indonesian police list of suspected extremists that includes several foreigners notorious in the West. Sailar, 47, and her 10-year-old Indonesia-born son, were being held in Jakarta after being picked up last year without documents allowing her to remain in the Southeast Asian nation, her lawyer Farid Ghozali said.
