Mizzima awarded global JTI certificate for reliable news on Myanmar

Burma’s Parliament calls for peace in Kachin State

Burma’s Lower House of Parliament approved by a voice vote on Friday a motion calling for a ceasefire in hostilities between government forces and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO).

"To implement the peace process, the proposal was approved to urge the responsible organizations and the government to start peace dialogue as soon as possible after immediately stopping the fighting between the KIO/KIA and government troops,” said Lower House Speaker Shwe Mann, a former military general.

The motion was put forward on Friday by MP Doi Bu of Injangiang Township in Kachin State. It was the second time in as many weeks that such a motion had been tabled following a similar request by Myitkyina MP Thein Zaw of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party last week.

According to the Lower House’s official website, the motion says that the Lower House urges “the relevant organization” [the KIO] and the government to immediately stop fighting in Kachin State and to start negotiations as soon as possible to establish peace.

First ministerial meeting held

Mizzima Myanmar held the first meeting among newly appointed ministers after a recent major cabinet reshuffle by the military in capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday morning, according to a release from the Military True News Information Team Xinhua reported. The Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, acting President U Myint Swe and nine newly appointed union ministers were present at the meeting held at the Presidential Palace, the release said. Min Aung Hlaing unveiled plans to include reopening religious buildings and pagodas, resuming domestic travel and hotel businesses as well as industries in line with COVID-19 rules and regulations, and revitalizing the country's economy.

Indonesia detains British woman on terror suspect list
