Four injured in small blast at NLD rally site

Saturday, 15 December 2012 13:57 Kun Chan

Four women were slightly injured on Friday afternoon when a device exploded in a field as they were clearing space for a rally where National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi is scheduled to deliver a speech next week, local authorities in Myeik confirmed.

Suu Kyi is due to appear at the rally on December 23 and to deliver a public address on a stage in front of the open land near a Chinese temple in Kanmaw Village in Myeik District, in Burma’s southern Tanintharyi [Tenessarim] Division.

“The women were making bonfires and clearing the land,” said Babu, the village headman. “A blast occurred at one of the bonfires.”

The four injured women, who were hit by flying debris, received medical treatment at Kanmaw Hospital and were soon returned to their homes.

Although some residents claim it was definitely a bomb blast, the local police have said that the cause of the explosion is still unknown.

Ahead of a local by-election, NLD chairperson Suu Kyi planned to travel to the villages—Sakhan Thit, Kanmaw and Kyunzu—on an island in the Andaman Sea. She is due to arrive in Kawthaung by flight on December 22 before travelling to Myeik.
