A petrol fire destroys a private station in Kalay

Monday, 10 January 2011 22:08 Mizzima News

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – A fire gutted a Myat Mettta Mon private petrol station in Panglong Ward in downtown Kalay, Sagaing Division, and damaged petrol tankers on Monday.

The fire started about 4 p.m. and was extinguished about 6:30 p.m. It started as a petrol tanker was discharging petrol into a tank at the station, according to local residents.

“The fire started while the petrol tanker was pouring petrol into a tank. The fire was huge. It’s lucky that it didn’t spread to nearby houses”, a teacher in Kalay told Mizzima.

Fire engines arrived 15 minutes after the fire started. Firefighters did not douse water on the flames because they were afraid that the flames would grow bigger, said local residents.

Monks from Mingalar Garden Monastery were ready to help nearby residents to avoid the spread of fire, said residents.

Because of the fire, illegal petrol traders in Kalay closed their moveable shops and fled to rural areas, witnesses told Mizzima.
