New Delhi (Mizzima) – Five houses with goods worth at least Kyat 1 million (approximately USD 1,000), were gutted in a fire in Burma’s second largest city of Mandalay on Thursday, a Central Fire Department official said.

The official of the Department in Mandalay city told Mizzima that the fire started when a candle kept at the in-house place of worship, fell down. The fire from the burning candle spread from the house to neighbouring houses in Maha Aung Myay Township’s Northern Chanmya Tharsi Ward at about 6 p.m. (local time).

“A total of five houses were reduced to ashes by the fire, which burnt for about half an hour. Goods and commodities worth about 1 million were destroyed by the fire,” the official said.

“It started from the candle kept at the place of worship of Win Ko’s house,” he added.

A local resident in Mandalay said, “I also heard there was a fire but I am not sure how it started and where.”
