The Sham Election of the Myanmar Military Junta
The National Unity Government (NUG)
-In Khin-U Township of Sagaing Region, the junta army conducted an aerial bombing on an IDP camp. Reportedly, 3 displaced people including a woman lost their lives and 10 others were injured.
-In Aunglan Township of Magway Region, Thayet District Regiment (2) caught a staff member of the District Education Office, who had allegedly been a drug dealer.
-In Natmauk Township of Magway Region, there has been fighting for 4 consecutive days between the junta army and the revolutionary forces. According to People’s Defence Force, no fewer than 15 junta soldiers including an officer died.
-Ministry of Social, Labour and Humanitarian Welfare-NUG stated that they have been trying their best to minimize harm to the public by removing landmines and unexploded weapons in Rakhine State. They also called on local and international experts to cooperate with them.
-U Nay Phone Latt, the spokesperson of the Union Prime Minister Office-NUG, stated that the junta’s attempt to resume the Myitsone Dam Project is giving out the heart of the nation for their iron grip of power.
Revolution Activities
-In Wetlet Township of Sagaing Region, the junta army carried out aerial bombings on Paukkan Butar Village and Yethaukkan Village.
-In Monywa Township of Sagaing Region, there were exchanges of fire between the revolution force and a junta car on mobile patrol in Nyaungbinsaut Ward. Reportedly, 3 comrades of Black Eagle LPDF from Yinmabin Township lost their lives.
-On January 5 alone, the military junta conducted airstrikes on Khin-U, Kathar and Myaing townships. Reportedly, no fewer than 9 local people lost their lives.
-In Myaing Township of Magway Region, the junta army carried out an aerial attack via 3 gyrocopters on Tuesday.
-A police officer and his wife from the junta’s police station in North Okkalapa Township of Yangon Region left the military junta. Reportedly, they fled to a liberated area in Karenni State.
-According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, over 1,500 people lost their lives due to the junta army and nearly 300 others were arbitrarily detained for political reason in 2025.
-In Yinmabin Township of Sagaing Region, a local rally protested against the junta’s sham election.
-According to Data for Myanmar, Union Solidarity and Development Party has been leading the junta’s first-phase election with over 340,000 advance votes.
-In Taungoo of Bago Region, a special urban force conducted an attack via explosion on the junta’s security camp near Maidar Ground in town.
Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs)
-In Northern Shan State, Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army has been destroying the land and cattle farms of local people in Southern Regional Command of the KIA Brigade (6). They have also been developing a housing project for their members without the consent of locals. Reportedly, the public have been protesting against it.
The Military Commission
-Starting from January 1, the junta’s Road Transport Administration Department increased the price of embossed number plates from 9,000MMK to 40,000MMK.
-The junta leader Min Aung Hlaing appointed Ex-Air Force chief of staff Lieutenant General Zaw Win Myint as Ambassador to China.
-The junta’s Youth Peace Forum aims to observe and identify contributing factors to conflicts and impacts on peace process to clearly understand youth’s voices.
-The final coordination meeting regarding the draft law to amend the Union Judiciary Law for the fifth time was held on Monday. Reportedly, present on the occasion were the junta’s Minister for Legal Affairs and the Union Attorney General Dr. Thida Oo and other responsible personnel.
-The junta’s Minister for Education received the Laos Ambassador to Myanmar.
-The junta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs received Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar.
-According to the junta propaganda media, the military junta has demolished 610 illegal buildings in KK Park of Myawaddy Township in Karen State, which were used for online scam operations.
-The Chair of the junta’s Union Election Commission U Than Soe claimed that they had carried out procedures regarding advance voting with transparency for 2025 Multi-Party General Election and they had already clarified the details.
-In the meeting with political parties on Monday, the Chair of the UEC said that candidates must submit expenditure statements according to the deadline and those who fail to do so will be declared as disqualified.
