Dozens of leading authors have gathered in Rangoon for The Irrawaddy Literary Festival this weekend.

The event is the first of its kind to be held in Burma since censorship was relaxed last year.

Aung San Suu Kyi, Wild Swans author Jung Chang, India's Vikram Seth and more than 80 Burmese authors will give a series of talks and debates throughout the three day festival.

“I am delighted to lend my support and personal participation to this first Irrawaddy Literary Festival,” the Nobel Peace Prize laureate said in November when her involvement was announced. “Literature has always been a big part of my life and I hope this festival, which brings together some of the finest talent from Burma, the UK and elsewhere will encourage more people to explore the world of literature and further their understanding of the English language.”

The festival is taking place at The Inya Lake Hotel from Friday February 1 until Sunday February 3.
