At least one person was killed and two were missing on Monday evening when an explosion and subsequent fire took place on an oil tanker on the Hlaing River in Yangon, according to rescue workers.

The explosion occurred at about 5 pm. The oil tanker was reported to have been filled with fuel and connected in a convoy to other ships at the time. A fire then broke out, witnesses told Mizzima, which took firefighters some 30 minutes to extinguish.
A middle-aged man was found dead in the engine room. The dead body was sent to Yangon Hospital. According to rescue workers, two people were still unaccounted for.
Although several fire engines from different townships across Yangon were able to respond in a timely fashion, others were caught in rush hour traffic jams, an official said, adding that crewmen used the ship’s fire extinguishers and a water pump to fight the fire until the fire engines arrived.
Fire fighters and members of the Red Cross were reluctant to answer questions and said they could not disclose details. They said that a press conference would be held on Tuesday.
