The YHT held an international conference at the Strand Hotel in June to build support with Burmese authorities in order to enact conservation laws to protect Rangoon's colonial heritage.

Minister Soe Thane has committed to stop issuing building permits until the Yangon Heritage Trust provides a set of proposals that could become law, designed to protect historically significant buildings, officials said.

A photography project to document the buildings includes extensive pictures of the Secretariat building, in which Aung San, the father of Aung San Suu Kyi, was assassinated in 1947. It includes the first pictures of inside the building in 60 years, said project officials.

A fundraising project is underway to publish a book, “Yangon, a City to Rescue.”
