(Mizzima) – In its latest urban improvement effort, Rangoon officials will upgrade parks and playgrounds, the Rangoon City Development Committee (YCDC) announced on Thursday.

Plans call for improving five parks and 22 playgrounds, officials said. The five parks include Maha Bandoola Park, Kandaw Mingala Park, People's Square and People's Park, Kanthaya Kokkine Park and Shukhintha Park.

There are 58 parks and 85 small and large playgrounds in the Rangoon municipal area, officials said.

Other urban plans call for an upgrading of Rangoon’s industrial sector including increasing population in less-populated sectors, preserving historical buildings, renovating roads and bridges and utilizing water supply resources systematically, under the region’s 30-year plan.

Funds for the project will be sought from local private enterprises, banks and through foreign investment.

Estimates say the area’s population will increase from 6 million to 10 million in the next 30 years.

The plan includes overpasses to be built at key traffic junctions including Hledan, Shwegondaing, Tarmwe and Bayintnaung traffic junctions, where traffic congestion is heaviest.

Construction on the Hledan overpass will start this year.

With a population of more than 6 million and an area of 795 square kilometers, Rangoon is divided into 45 townships, of which 33 include the municipal area.
