Rangoon (Mizzima) – The Ministry of Labour starting this month has allowed Burmese job placement agencies to legally find jobs in Malaysia for female workers.

The female workers have to pay 900 ringgit, the equivalent to a one-month salary, for the job placement service. The agencies are believed to have sent about 200 female workers to Malaysia so far.

Three job agencies have sent the female workers with the permission of the ministry, according to sources close to job agencies.

An official at a job agency said, “It is a factory manufacturing electronic devices. The accommodation is safe for women. The factory still needs about 7,000 workers.”

The female workers must pay for air tickets and passports, and the company will refund the expenses later, according to a job agency.

The minimum job requirements are a worker must be between 20 and 35 years old and have passed grade 8.

When the workers obtain a Malaysian visa, the company will refund the expense to the workers. For service charges, the job agencies take 150 ringgit per month from a worker’s salary for six months.

The workers must work 20 days per month and the salary is 900 ringgit per month. The currency exchange rate on Thursday was one ringgit to 279.4 kyat.

A female worker in her thirties said, “If we do not work overtime, the job will not be worthwhile. And the salary will be cut, so net income per month is about 100,000 kyat (US$ 114). So, I have to pray that I can work overtime.”
